From Civil Service to Pure Service: The MeeMee Journey
After working for the Govt. of Kerala in different capacities over the span of 3 decades, I, PM Ali Asgar Pasha, finally welcomed my retired life in 2023 but a huge void remained because I could not find a purpose that inspired me in the same way that my life as a civil servant did. I recalled my time with the department of Civil Supplies and The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation where I was involved in a lot of procurement decisions and came to know of the extensive use of pesticides and other chemical adulterants in the food we consumed, and learnt more about the adverse effect it has on our health. At the time, I used to find sources of organic, preservative free, adulterant free food products for use in my immediate family and would often provide samples to my relatives and close friends from whom I received positive feedback regarding the same.

With this in mind, I decided it was high time to embark on a mission, a humble effort to procure and make available wholesome pure food that catered both to our taste buds and did not take a toll on either our wallet or our health and hence began the journey of MeeMee Restaurant that has now also taken shape of an online e-commerce platform (INSTAGRAM) that will deliver the organic products to your doorstep. Considering that there are no middle men involved as all procurement is done through MeeMee directly (economies of large-scale) and since we cater through an online platform we are able to price the organic products at extremely competitive rates and also stand apart from other products in terms of quality and affordability!

The curious case of yellow hands – Who is the actual culprit in the Turmeric Story?
Most of us may have seen a raw turmeric at some point in our life, and turmeric powder or “haldi” is a staple spice in most of our gravies, not only for its flavour but also for its health benefits. But the story behind how a raw turmeric piece is processed into powder is something something we need to pay more attention to. When the raw piece of turmeric is converted to its powder form 10% of starch is legally allowed by the Govt to be used as a blending agent. Now imagine a scenario where a raw piece of turmeric is Rs. 150/kg and starch costs only Rs. 10/kg which leads most profit-oriented businesses to exceed the 10% starch blend that is legally allowed. Now while starch in itself does not have any concerning health effects, due to its bleaching effect, the turmeric powder stands to lose its trademark yellow colour and to overcome this, most businesses make use of a synthetic dye which has extremely adverse health effects. Therefore, sometimes when you use Turmeric Powder, you are left with stained hands which in most cases is due to the colouring agent used in extremely starch-diluted turmeric powder.
